Step Ladder Theory |
Being a leader in the engineering field means I will be working with people that are majority analytics and technical based. Everyone will be bringing their own strengths to the table but we can't make an efficient team unless we take the right steps. By utilizing the step ladder theory, in the future I will be able to lead and mange teams to be the most efficient as possible. It will start by having everyone reflect on themselves and figure out what they bring to the table. Next I will guide the team to build relationships with each other before even starting the project. Then we will become more comfortable with each other where people aren't scared to share their own idea. I will create a safe environment for free thinking. Once everyone is comfortable we can start looking at the task at hand, set goals and plans into place. Finally execution and making sure everyone is communicating and has the same vision.

Making Tough Decisions
Being a leader every decision you make is going to have two sides where one side is happy and one is not. While some decisions have obvious answers there are some that test your ethics and morals. During our class with Dr. Bunds and Dr. Bocarro we went through simulations of making decisions that tested our ethics. Many of the situations we faced had controversial solutions no matter what you decided. So how should we make decisions when faced with very tough issues. Dr. Bunds had us list out our top five values in order from the most important to the least. When faced with the tough decisions he told us it's important to refer back to your list of values and base your decisions off of your most important values. This way you are making a decision that you truly believe is right. For example Dr. Bunds told us he has never stolen anything in his life, but if his child was starving and had no money, he would steal food without second guessing. His top value is family so when there was a decision involving his family, he is always going to put his family first.
Going into the future by having my values clear I will be able to make these tough decisions as a leader. By doing this you are also creating transparency because if people ask why you made a decision, you will have a clear answer as to why. Holding true to your value will also show that you are reliable and unwavering even with the toughest of choices. Team members and employees might not like your decision but cannot be mad when you back it up with transparency as to why you made the choice.
