In the Capstone class we completed the Thunderbird Global Mindset Assessment in right when we started the program and when we finished the program as well. By doing so we are able to see areas we needed to improve and how we changed throughout the program
OVERVIEW
As our world becomes more and more connected, organizations need employees who are adept at working with people who are different from them. Developing attributes that assist to influence others that are from different backgrounds is critical to a globalized workforce. Three components of a global mindset is one's:
Intellectual Capital
Psychological Capital
Social Capital
Students are expected to apply these attributes through experience, practice, evaluation and assessment within the context of course work and exploration while living and traveling throughout the program.

INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL
This category reflects on three key components. Global business savvy is knowledge of industries, business strategies, supplier options and assessing risk on a global scale. Cosmopolitan outlook involves knowledge of global cultures, history, geography economies, politics, religions and staying up to date on world events. Cognitive complexity is the ability to grasp complex concepts quickly, possess strong problem solving skills and understand abstract ideas.

My knowledge of different cultures and businesses around the world was not strong coming into this program, but I thought I knew a decent amount. After going through this program I realize there is so much more for me to learn than I previously thought. My cognitive complexity was high coming in and is still at a good mark. I pride myself on my ability to work well under pressure in complex situations. I would say it dropped a little due to the fact that I have never had to deal with large ethical decisions before and in this program I was exposed to situations where I was struggling to figure out what the best choice was. Overall this program made me realize that there is so much more in this world that I didn't know about.
SOCIAL CAPITAL
This category entails three major parts. Intercultural empathy means having the ability to work well with others, understand nonverbal expressions, emotionally connect with people, and with engage people from all over the world. Interpersonal impact involves being able to negotiate, have a strong reputation as a leader and have a good network with people from different cultures. Diplomacy means having the ability to start conversations with ease, collaboration skills, integrate divers perspectives and be able to listen.

This section dropped the most for me, especially intercultural empathy. I believe is dropped so much is because I over estimate my abilities to connect and work with people from different cultures. I came in thinking that it would be easier since I have never had a problem with people in the same culture as me. I was over confident in my abilities to strike up conversation and understand cultural norms in different countries. It took time to navigate what is appropriate and what isn't when talking to people so I was a little more reserved than I thought I was going to be. Eventually these skills grew and I was perfectly fine with working with people in other cultures but my skills were not the same as they were when I am surrounded by people from my own culture.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CAPITAL
This category encapsulates three main categories. Passion for diversity means enjoying other parts of the world, living in other countries, travelling and getting to know new people. Quest for Adventure entails willing to take risk, wanting to test your abilities, enjoy unpredictable and challenging situations. Self Assurance involves being energetic, self-confident, and being comfortable and witty in tough situations.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CAPITAL - 4.64/5 PASSION FOR DIVERSITY - 4.5/5 QUEST FOR ADVENTURE - 4.8/5 SELF ASSURANCE - 4.6/5 |
NEW SCORE
PSYCHOLOGICAL CAPITAL - 4.39/5 PASSION FOR DIVERSITY - 3.97/5 QUEST FOR ADVENTURE - 4.4/5 SELF ASSURANCE - 4.8/5 |
This is my strongest aspect coming into the program and leaving it. I have always been a person eager to learn more and try new experiences. The main reason I see my scores going down for diversity and adventure is that I have been in Europe for over two months and have experienced a lot of new things. It can be overwhelming sometimes which makes the comfort of home sound nice. Everyday is a new experience and I am person that likes to get into routines, so that drive to experience new things has dwindled a little bit because that thirst has been quenched. Self assurance is the only aspect out of the whole assessment that went up over the program. This program has made me more confident because I am reaffirming that when I am in tough or uncomfortable situations it does not faze me. Overall this section was my strongest and stayed there because my of drive for and comfortability in new experiences.
